Bridging here to eternity

The old bridge that connected our neighborhood with a college campus looked solid enough. But, its underbelly told a different story. Rust and crumbling concrete eroded the span to the point the city abruptly closed it and removed a section to make sure it didn’t collapse with someone on it.

The new bridge is light and airy aluminum — yet solid enough to carry track teams, bicyclists and the occasional (rather wary) dog.

It’s much the same with us and eternal life. It might look like we have a solid plan to get there. But, do we? Or, does the thought of death and what may be beyond it simply make us afraid?

My new book, Making a Grand Exit: Biblical Answers to Our Fear of Dying, looks at this very question scripture by scripture. Here’s a peek at some of the Word that is discussed:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15

“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:20b

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

“I (Jesus) am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Revelation 1:18
